Texas Animal-Friendly License Plate
Will Help Reduce Pet Overpopulation
Texas now joins with other states in offering an animal-friendly license plate for cars and light trucks. Sales of these plates will supply funds that will be granted to eligible free or low-cost spay/neuter programs. Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia already have such plates, and several other states are working to pass similar laws.
Each state law is unique in how it operates. Here's how the program works in Texas:
The price of each plate will be $25 in addition to the regular vehicle registration fee. $20 will be credited to an animal-friendly account in the general revenue fund. $5 will be applied to administrative costs.
The animal-friendly account must collect $500,000 by September 1, 2001, before the funds can be distributed to eligible spay/neuter programs. The Texas Department of Health will administer the account under the guidance of an Animal Friendly Advisory Committee. If the $500,000 is not collected by the deadline, the money will be transferred to the general revenue fund.
You must fill out an application and submit it to the Texas Department of Transportation along with the plate fee. Allow four to five weeks for notification of approval and plate manufacturing. Once the plate is ready, your current license plate and validation sticker must be surrendered to the County Tax Assessor.
