Volunteer Opportunities
Our organization offers a wealth of volunteer opportunities. We cannot do all that we do without our wonderful volunteers. We need volunteers to walk the dogs, play with cats, foster animals in their homes, clean, assist with office tasks, and help with special events and fundraising. We always need caring people who want to make a difference in an animal’s life and in our community.
Become A Volunteer
If you would like to make a difference in the lives of our animals, we would love to have you join us! In order to be a volunteer:
  • Fill out a Volunteer Profile  Volunteer Registration Application
  • Attend an orientation
  • Be 18 years or older. If you are a minor you need to have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult.
  • Be able to donate at least 4 hours a month
  • Support the mission, principles and policies of the Humane Society of Southeast Texas
  • When you submit your profile, you will be prompted to select an orientation date. After you select a date, you will get a confirmation email. The volunteer orientations are held the first Saturday of the month at the shelter. Orientations start at 10:30am and end about 11:30am. Some positions will require additional training which can be scheduled at a later date.
Once you have signed up for an orientation date you will receive an email reminder the Monday before your scheduled orientation. If you have any questions, please contact the shelter at (409) 833-0504.
    Become a Foster
Our shelter operates at full capacity most of the time. That’s when our Foster Care Program swoops in to save the day. Sometimes, animals are not yet ready to be adopted. Sometimes they need special care. If you can open your heart and home and provide temporary care for any of our orphans, please consider filling out a foster application.
    Here’s how it works:
    1. We receive a dog or cat that can’t be immediately placed in the shelter. Our clinic staff will evaluate each animal to determine their individual care requirements.
    2. Foster homes are called and/or sent a text message. The first willing foster home will come to HSSET and pick up the animal- along with information and supplies.
    3. The animal goes to the foster home until they are ready for adoption or can be admitted to the shelter. You will need to bring your foster back to the shelter for check-ups and to adoption events periodically.
    4. The foster animal is returned to HSSET and placed up for permanent adoption.
    5. The foster animal gets adopted.
    6. The foster animal lives happily ever after.
    Becoming A Foster Volunteer
First, you need to fill out a foster profile and attend an orientation session. While at the orientation you will meet our staff and learn everything you need to know about caring for a foster animal.
Things to Consider Before Becoming a Foster:
    1. Will you have time to spend with the animal? Expect to spend 1-2 hours a day (minimum). Socializing is vital to an animal’s success in being adopted.
    2. Do you already have animals? If so, you’ll need to keep your foster animals separated from your pets. You dogs and cats can be vulnerable to illness.
    3. Do you have time to bathe, groom and clean up after your foster animal? Puppies and kittens are always doing one of five things: eating, sleeping, playing, peeing, or pooping.
    4. Will you be emotionally prepared to return your foster animal to HSSET? Usually, this is the most difficult part of the process. It’s easy to become attached to foster animals.
    5.
